UNESCO Matribhasha Diwas to be celebrated on 21 February 2019
UNESCO has been observing 21st February each year as International Mother Language Day to promote the dissemination of mother tongue and fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance, and dialogue.
MHRD has decided to celebrate Matribhasha Diwas on 21-Feb-2019 to promote the use of mother tongue. All the schools, colleges, universities and language related institutions under both Central and State Governments are requested to celebrate this day with the following objectives:-
- Highlight the linguistic diversity of our country
- Encourage usage, not only of the respective mother tongue but other Indian languages as well.
- To understand and draw attention to the diversity of cultures, in India and the consequent forums of literature, craft, performing arts, scripts and other forms of creative expression.
- To encourage the learning of languages, other than one's own mother tongue.
Accordingly, heads of all the educational institutions have been requested to organize the activities to achieve the mentioned objectives. During the day, the following indicatively could be taken up by the educational institutions, preferably in at least two languages, possibly more.
Elocution, Debating, Singing, Essay writing competitions, Painting Competitions, Music and dramatic performance, Exhibitions, Online resources, and activities as well as events exploring the cognitive, economic, social and cultural activities of multilingual society, Exhibitions depicting a linguistic and diverse wealth of India.
